Under his ‘Alsogood’ music guise, Italian producer and musician Francesco Lo Giudice has chartered an inspired musical journey across a multitude of releases.

Openly declaring his vast array of inspirations from the monumental releases of John Coltrane to the more contemporary hip-hop aesthetic of James “Dilla” Yancey, so much of Alsogood’s music reflects those inspirations, leaning into the styles of various artists at various times.

A huge amount of Lo Giudice’s early projects captured the lo-fi beats and dusty grooves of beat tapes and Donuts-sized (and Donuts-styled) productions. Tiny snapshots of his hip-hop influences across EPs and standalone singles including ‘Homeless in a Suite’ (2020) and ‘ProducerLife’ (2019).

Lo Giudice’s foray into more dynamic compositions and arrangements would eventually follow with the formation of Figùra, pairing him with Emanuele Triglia and Alessandro Pollio. Building upon their affections for golden era hip-hop, the repertoire was expanded to cater for more blatant nods to contemporary jazz making the unveiling of ‘Place to Be’ a fantastic extension to his previous solo efforts. Backed by an inspired guest list of notable vocalists, rappers and musicians, ‘Place to Be’ remains a compulsory listen amongst the Alsogood canon.

While Figùra proved an excellent extension of Lo Giudice’s vision, the music was also demonstrative of his desire for his own evolution – in sound as well as maturity. And just as ‘Place to Be’ would challenge the Alsogood sound, so would the transition to Island Records affording another opportunity for reinvention…

Boasting an all-star supporting line-up including Ivan Mamão Conti, Maria Chiara Argirò and DJ Harrison, ‘Elsewhere’ ushered in a new transition of Lo Giudice’s make-up embracing even more facets to an already ever-evolving sound which leads perfectly to the release of ‘1000 Smiles’… The hip-hop stylings remain, particularly in terms of the drums employed throughout, but the scope of the project immerses itself in the summer-centric sounds of Latin and bossa-tinged jazz slotting somewhere in between a sliding scale of Café del Mar and Nicola Conte.

In truth, listening to ‘1000 Smiles’, you’d hardly believe it to be a project born of the same mind as the early beat-tapes we cited previously. No doubt, nuanced compositions in themselves, ‘1000 Smiles’ brazenly recontextualises Lo Giudice’s music for a wider audience keen to embrace more diverse styles.

Serving as the project’s producer as well as handling the bulk of instrumentation for the album including piano, synthesizer, drum programming and electric bass, Lo Giudice is further joined by Figùra bandmates in bassist Emanuele Triglia and Alessandro Pollio as well as vocalists Datsunn, Johnny Marsiglia and Karhys.

‘1000 Smiles’ marks a wonderful step in Alsogood’s ongoing evolution – an incredible mind continually striving to express himself musically now gifting listeners the perfect summer accompaniment.
