Scandinavian folk music and jazz have long shared a natural affinity. Both traditions value melody, space and the freedom to let musicians shape the music in the moment. On Väst, the debut from Cuadra Collective, Swedish saxophonist and composer Christian Cuadra explores that meeting point with quiet confidence, leading a quartet that produces music of understated beauty, its fascinating folk melodies sparking the imagination.

Cuadra first developed this material after composing the music for Eldnatten, the opening fire ceremony at the Urkult festival, in 2022, gradually refining it into a permanent ensemble. He is joined by three musicians who have become leading voices on the contemporary Nordic scene: Norwegian fiddler and Hardanger fiddle player Selma French, bassist and modular synthesist Egil Kalman, and drummer Anton Jonsson. Together they create music that is rooted in Scandinavian folk traditions while embracing jazz improvisation and subtle electronic colourings.

The opening piece, ‘Preludium’, immediately sets the tone for all that follows. Folk melodies drift effortlessly into free-flowing improvisation, while Kalman‘s restrained electronic textures broaden the acoustic landscape without swamping it. Throughout the record, there is an appealing sense of spaciousness. Every instrument has room to breathe, allowing French‘s expressive fiddle to intertwine beautifully with Cuadra‘s warm, lyrical saxophone lines.

The strongest moments arrive when the quartet fully commits to collective improvisation. The folk tunes are treated as living material, gently reshaped and stretched, fresh pathways discovered while the melodies at their heart stay in view. Some passages genuinely sparkle, evoking forests, lakes and vast Nordic landscapes through carefully balanced interplay and patient musical storytelling.

Yet I find Väst an elusive listen. Its restrained dynamics and measured pacing sometimes blur the distinctions between individual compositions, and while the atmosphere remains consistently attractive, few moments feel vividly immersive. The musicianship is never in doubt, but a touch of contrast or emotional urgency would have lifted the record beyond its admirable craftsmanship.

Credit should also go to Swedish independent label toppkonst, founded in 2020 by bassist Alfred Lorinius, pianist John Holmström and guitarist Carl Svensson. Working to a refreshingly DIY philosophy, the label has become a home for adventurous Scandinavian jazz and improvised music, giving a project like Cuadra Collective room to develop at its own pace.

Väst is an intriguing and thoughtfully realised debut that works well as a collaborative album. Its fusion of Nordic folk traditions, contemporary jazz and subtle electronics offers plenty to admire. If it doesn’t quite reach the promise of its finest passages, it leaves the impression of a group with considerable potential still waiting to unfold.
