Mongo Santamaria - Afro Blue (2018)

Percussionist Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" has been one of the most widely interpreted pieces in the field of Latin Jazz, blending a melody which simulates an African tribal chant and driving Cuban rhythm. Santamaria initially recorded his piece in 1959 as a member of Cal Tjader's group in a live set at Concerts by the Sea before taping it himself just a few months later. Although many instrumental interpretations by other artists have been released by artists like Roland Kirk, McCoy Tyner, Steve Nelson and Emily Remler, John Coltrane's recordings for Impulse helped put the stamp of approval on the song (increasing the tempo and repeating phrases within the song to build up its tension), though the saxophonist was inexplicably credited as its composer on both of his Impulse albums which contained it. Oscar Brown, Jr. added lyrics and recorded it in 1960; other singers who have latched onto this popular work include Abbey Lincoln, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dianne Reeves.
