Gianandrea Noseda and the London Symphony Orchestra launch a cycle of the complete Shostakovich symphonies with one of the 20th Century's most iconic artistic statements.

Few pieces of classical music have been the subject of so much debate and discussion as the Fifth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich. Following the 'justified criticism' of his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk it marked a turning point in the composer's career, after which he balanced an even more precarious position as an artist under Stalin's brutal regime.

"This project comes at the right time in my career, when I feel like I can say something worthwhile about this music. I have taken advantage of my time living in St Petersburg – not as a tourist, but living with the Russian people: going to the market, working in the Mariinsky Theatre; all helping me to understand life there – but it’s only now that I’m not there anymore that I can take a step back and see the music with some perspective."
