Anne-Sophie Mutter was a mere teenager when this recording was made. Forget the age factor and realize you are hearing a true virtuosi. Mutter's soaring passages, done with the slightest amount of pressure and an unfailing technique in the highest registers of the violin, does not allow the orchestra to swallow her up. Her sound touches upon ethereal and reaches into the listener's soul, especially during the first (and longest) movement. Some armchair critics find fault with this recording. Listen to a conductor. This is, in the final analysis, a faithful interpretation of Beethoven's masterpiece for violin. Even Beethoven would have been moved to tears by its beauty.
