Summer comes and the festival season starts. Therefore we present a great festival live recordings from the beginning of the 70's. The Heidelberger Jazz Tage '73. This amazing constellation of groups ranges from traditional to modern through fusion and experimental.
This amazing constellation of groups ranges from traditional to modern through fusion and experimental. Guitarist, composer, writer, and cartoonist Volker Kriegel's quartet Spectrum was at the forefront of the European jazz fusion scene. His Lastic Plemon flashes by, fast-moving and funky with some hip rhythmic surprises. Austrian pianist Fritz Pauer played with virtually every major figure in modern jazz. Teamed up with bassist Jimmy Woode of Ellington Orchestra fame, Pauer's trio burns through Woode's funky, blues-drenched Don't Move. Hungarian-born guitarist Attila Zoller worked with stylists ranging from Benny Goodman to Herbie Hancockand was admired by such guitarists as Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Zoller's quartet plays his powerful Boara Sbar, a piece that combines Hungarian folk and fusion. ...
Line-Up: Association P.C. + Jeremy Steig, Attila Zoller Quartett, Fritz Pauer Trio, Spectrum, Turk Murphy's Frisco Jazz Band
„This compilation recorded during the 1973 Heidelberg Jazz Festival is a wide-ranging sampler with individual selections by six different groups. Fusion guitarist Volker Kriegel's group Spectrum offers his brisk, somewhat funky "Lastic People." Pianist Fritz Pauer (one of Art Farmer's favorite accompanists) leads a trio with bassist Jimmy Woode and drummer Erich Bachträgl through Woode's intense "Don't Move." Brilliant guitarist Attila Zoller's "Boara Sbar" starts subtly but abruptly switches into a brash fusion setting. Guitarist Toto Blanke's meandering "Spider," featuring Association P.C. with guest Jeremy Steig on flute, has the feeling of free improvisation. Tenor saxophonist Bobby Jones, part of the group Summit, composed the unpredictable hard bop number "Don't Stop Now," which also has some fine playing by trumpeter Dusko Goykovich and pianist Horace Parlan. To complete the album, traditional jazz veteran Turk Murphy's spirited rendition of "Dr. Jazz" ends this unusual anthology on a bright note.“ (Ken Dryden, AMG)
