Tonepool Paradox is the second album by Tyn Wybenga’s Brainteaser Orchestra. A large ensemble built somewhere between jazz, hip-hop, electronics and contemporary composition.
The music on this album was originally commissioned by Amsterdam jazz club BIMHUIS for its 50th anniversary. It brings together Brainteaser’s 13-piece orchestra plus guests with very different voices: Berlin-based saxophonist Otis Sandjö, French violinist Theo Ceccaldi, hip-hop vocalist Pink Oculus and American soul singer Lizz Wright.
The way the music is made is perhaps as unusual as the music itself. Rather than writing the compositions from scratch, Wybenga starts with recordings of the orchestra improvising. He then cuts these recordings into fragments, samples and rearranges them, using them as raw material for new compositions — more like a hip-hop producer working with samples than a traditional composer writing for a big band.
The result is a kind of musical feedback loop: improvisation becomes composition, composition becomes performance, and performance becomes raw material again. Hence the Tonepool Paradox.
The album was mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer Nic Hard (Snarky Puppy).
