Haavisto’s compositions are based on beautiful melodies while the music still explores free elements and multilayered, surprising rhythmic motifs. Joonas Haavisto Trio has been playing together for over ten years and this special relationship and subtly shine through: “…the trio’s real thrill lies in its unique balance and those breathtaking moments in their nuanced playing"
Joonas talks about the making of ‘Gradation’: “We recorded the album at Kallio-Kuninkala studios in Järvenpää. It is an area 50km north from Helsinki of beautiful countryside located by a lake. There are many old mansions, where a number of famous Finnish artists used to live in the beginning of 20th century. Kallio-Kuninkala is one of them, next to Ainola, which was home of Jean Sibelius. The studio is built in an old cattle shed. Although we play in separate rooms - the Steinway grand in the biggest room with drums and bass in smaller ones - we still perform and record everything together.”
