George Wein's Newport All-Stars in the 1960's featured a pair of great Eddie Condon alumnus (clarinetist Pee Wee Russell and tenor-saxophonist Bud Freeman), a swinging rhythm section (the leader-pianist, bassist Jack Lesberg and drummer Don Lamond) and the highly expressive cornetist Ruby Braff. The music on this Lp, taken from concerts in Mexico, are among Russell's last good recordings before his quick decline. The eight swing standards are all given inventive and spirited treatment and each of the musicians gets their chances to shine.
