Delightfully daring jazz vocals Kate Reid – THE HEART ALREADY KNOWS: There’s one word that best describes Kate’s delightfully daring jazz vocals on her March, 2018 release – “tasty”! As you listen to the laid-back piano and Kate’s perfect vocal pacing on “Busy Being Blue“, you’ll hear why I say that… this is a magical tune you could (and will, I predict) listen to for hours – as I did!
When I first reviewed her sultry vocals back in issue # 121, said that her talent is “totally engaging”, and this new aural adventure goes even deeper into exploring the nuances of human hearts; I just couldn’t stop listening to the mellow strains of “Secret O’ Life“… if this doesn’t inspire you to dig down and discover the joy of living, you’re far beyond recovery.
The players Kate has supporting her stellar vocals lend a lot to the brilliance of the performances… pianists Fred Hersch, Taylor Eigsti and guitarists Romero Lubambo, Paul Meyers and Larry Koonse help her to bring tunes like “Confessin’“… a perfect example of how well jazz guitar can mesh with a well-performed jazz vocal – and Kate’s scat lines on this one are sheer perfection.
The song that held me absolutely spellbound, though, is “Minds of Their Own“… it’s definitely my choice for personal favorite of the eleven tunes offered up for your aural enjoyment. I give Kate and her compadres a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98. ~Dick Metcalf
