Oh que non, Hindemith n’a pas écrit que des sonates pour son propre instrument principal, l’alto ; on lui en connaît une bonne trentaine pour nombre d’instruments en tout genre. Pour preuve ce CD comportant cinq sonates de la grande maturité : pour saxhorn alto de 1943 (Althorn, en allemand), pour violoncelle de 1948, pour trompette de 1939, pour violon de 1935, et pour trombone de 1941 – le tout, naturellement, avec accompagnement de piano. Hindemith, qui touchait un peu à tous les instruments, savait précisément jusqu’où il pouvait aller trop loin dans les exigences faites aux musiciens, d’où le langage particulièrement complet et satisfaisant de ces œuvres. Petite curiosité de la sonate pour saxhorn et piano, les deux instrumentistes ouvrent le dernier mouvement en se partageant un petit poème plaisant concocté par Hindemith lui-même ! Outre la violoniste-star Isabelle Faust qui officie dans la sonate pour violon et le fameux pianiste Alexander Melnikov en passe de starisation lui-même, on retrouve une belle brochette de superbes instrumentistes, en tête desquels il convient de distinguer l’extraordinaire tromboniste Gerard Costes.
