This CD presents rare and previously unreleased solo violin improvisation by the Japanese avant-garde composer. A vital figure in the experimental music movement of the '60s, Kosugi was a member of the pinoeering improvisational groups Group Ongaku and Taj Mahal Travellers, and is a contemporary of composers Toshi Ichiyanagi and Yuji Takahashi. Making vital music in the Tokyo avant-garde idiom, he is here recorded in New York performing a compelling solo violin improvisation that employs techniques of free jazz mixed with the abstract sensibilities of the classical avant-garde. A stunning historical work, this requires a degree of attention to find reward in its details, but is a solid and compelling piece of avant-garde music.
