ARMANDO PICO. Tenor. He was born in Havana (Cuba), on July 17, 1933. He started his music studies with the baritone Joaquín Baralt, he continued with the tenor José Ojeda and perfected his technique with the Romanian soprano Ana Talmaceanu. He made his debut in 1952 as an amateur artist in the Galician Artistic Association with LA DEL SOTO DEL PARRAL and KATIUSKA. In 1956 he participated in a staging of EL CAFETAL, and the following year at the premiere of GOYESCAS on Cuban television. He debuted professionally in 1958 with the zarzuela company of Alberto Aguila and Antonio Martelo in LOS GAVILANES. In 1960 he sang the opera DON PASQUALE for the Pro-Arte Musical Society Grateli, and he joined the cast of the definitive version of CECILIA VALDÉS presented in 1961 at the Teatro Payret. In 1962 he starred in operas such as LA ESCLAVA, MADAMA BUTTERFLY, TOSCA or LA TRAVIATA; but above all, zarzuelas and operetas, genres in which he excelled for his excellent acting skills; Among these are titles such as LUISA FERNANDA, MARÍA LA O, LA PRINCESA DE LA CZARDA, LA VERBENA DE LA PALOMA and LA VIUDA ALEGRE. In 1963 he took part in the re-creation of the comic zarzuela LA CASITA CRIOLLA, by Jorge Ánckermann, at the Amadeo Roldán Theater, and made numerous television appearances. As an interpreter of the Cuban popular song, he appeared in the different media, as well as in nightclubs throughout the country. Between July and August of 1965 he toured the Soviet Union, and in 1967 he participated in the First Festival of the Song of Varadero. In 1980 he emigrated to the USA, where he collaborated extensively in the productions of the Pro-Arte Grateli Society of Miami, the city where he established his residence.
