Tatsuya Nakatani - acoustic sounds, percussion, voice

Tatsuya Nakatani's solo percussion performances are breathtaking presentations that balances beautiful sonic expression with intense percussion work. His playing seems effortless, whether creating slow sound chambers or moving at seemingly impossible speeds using extended techniques and inventive uses of bowls, bows, cymbals and drum heads. He is a marvel to watch perform, and his playing translates to captivating and unexpected music.
Present Presence begins with an "Emergence", drawing breath from the earth in a slow chant with ringing bells, setting the stage. Through thirteen pieces Nakatani takes us on an expedition in the modern use of percussion, beautifully paced with rich sound, unexpected harmonic properties, and fascinating punctuation. The pieces range from the thoughtful and introspective to agitated expression, from glacial bowing to tribal cadence, always drawing the listener into Nakatani's curious arsenal and approach to sound. Several pieces are 2 minutes or less, with the longest measuring 7 minutes, each the exact length to captivate without wandering. The album is an outstanding achievement in skill and restraint, and an excellent representation of Nakatani's live performances. Highly recommended!
