Nat King Cole Trio - The King Cole Trio, Vol. 4 (1949)

The fourth volume in the King Cole Trio series, released by Capitol, presents the peak of the group’s creative method. The trio of Nat “King” Cole became famous for an improvisational technique: no written arrangements were used on the recordings. The material grew out of inspiration during the playing itself and was then polished through many hours of rehearsal. The result is a blend of live spontaneity, flawless rhythm and precision that other small combos trying to imitate Cole could not match. The approach depends on the individual talent and personality of each musician and on their interplay, so Cole’s leadership remains unchallenged.
