Virginia native Al Johnson co-founded the soul group The Unifics in which he was the lead vocalist while attending Howard University in Washington, D.C. in the late 1960’s. The group scored three hits on the Billboard Hot 100 including "Court Of Love" which rose to the number 3 position on the R&B chart, and the follow-up "The Beginning Of The End" which cracked the top 10 in 1969. In 1978 Johnson recorded the soul-funk tinged solo album, "Peaceful" which he co-produced, arranged and wrote for the tiny Marina label which was owned in part by the iconic singer Lloyd Price. The album was recorded partly in New Orleans, New York City and Johnson’s home state of Virginia, and.featured an all star band including Bernard Purdie on drums and guitar work from Leo Nocentelli from the famed New Orleans funk band The Meters. Finally available in the digital domain, all selections have been newly remastered.
