Performers:
Michala Petri, Recorder
London Philharmonic Orchestra
James Judd, conductor

Recorder player Michaela Petri's masterful exhibition of virtuoso intimacy beautifully exemplifies the musical character of Sweden, Denmark and Norway on Scandinavian Moods. The disc comprises music by the 18th-century troubadour Carl Michael Bellmann, his 20th-century apostle and main expositor Evert Taube, and Norwegian violinist/composer Ole Bull-all household names in Scandinavia--as well as arrangements of folk music, folk-inspired composers like Grieg and Nielsen, plus modern examples of folk/jazz show tunes. Petri flaunts her impressive technique and breath control while the light-hearted yet sensitive arrangements by Wolfgang Kafer are tastefully executed by LPO under James Judd. However, the dynamic limitations of the recorder hold the orchestra in a steady stranglehold of mezzoforte. Petri sounds best in duet with jazz bass guru Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, an impressive example of Scandinavian jazz musicians' affinity with their own folk traditions.
