The Explorers - Explorers (1985)

personnel :

Guitar, Keyboards – Phil Manzanera
Saxophone – Andy Mackay
Vocals – James Wraith

The amazing thing about this album is that two-thirds of the people responsible for the astounding Avalon actually are responsible for this complete and utter mess. Following Bryan Ferry's departure from Roxy Music, Phil Manzanera and Andy MacKay decided to carry on and form a new band, which should have sounded brilliant. Unfortunately they decided to hire a Ferry sound-alike and attempted to jump the '80s synth/pop/dance bandwagon. It is a shame, as MacKay and Manzanera are very talented individuals and have produced excellent solo albums, but their choice of lead singer, Wraith, is dubious at best. There are no highlights, although "Lorelei" is tolerable. The rating is for Mazanera and Mackay's place in rock music history, otherwise this album would never have been pressed. Roxy Music completists need bother, all others should avoid and stay with the Roxy Music catalog.~Aaron Badgley
