Franz Ignaz Beck was an exact contemporary of Haydn, and his symphonies achieved almost as much popularity as Haydn's--especially in France. The three works recorded here are all full-length, four-movement works in established classical forms. Where they differ from the works of Haydn and Mozart is in their comparative lack of thematic development and elaboration, something that in the high Classical style was as important as the quality of the melodies themselves. Nevertheless, his reputation was entirely deserved. These vibrant performances on "authentic" instruments present the music with maximum vigor and grace. Haydn admired Beck, so who are we to criticize?
