Like its 1969 second volume Through The Past Darkly, Big Hits (High Tide & Green Grass) is a fine collection of sixties Stones classics, but with a lean toward their blues background. This is exemplified by such rootsy tracks as the redefined Buddy Holly tune 'Not Fade Away' and the R&B bounce of Bobby Womack's 'It's All Over Now'.

The bitterness of 'Get Off My Cloud', delivered in Mick Jagger's best Sidcup dialect still sounds magnificent, as does Brian Jones's booming Vox pearl guitar on 'The Last Time' and Keith Richards's opening chords to the aforementioned 'Not Fade Away'. This is one to hand down to the children.

„With High Tide and Green Grass', the band produced the best greatest-hits record of the mid '60s. 'High Tide's' 12 cuts remain the triumph of a perfect rhythm section: Charlie Watts' backbeat - casual, unerring and swinging - by then was unrivaled; Bill Wyman's bass lines fused exactly with Watt's drumming; and Richard's guitar was unabashed body music.' (Rolling Stone)

'A concise collection of the group's early hits, with no surprises.' (All Music Guide)
