This pioneering recording, which was first released in 1995 as a set of four conventional CDs, contains the complete solo lute pieces ascribed to John Dowland. As opposed to the composer’s lute songs and instrumental dances, which Dowland himself carefully prepared for publication, his lute solos have survived in much less reliable versions. Jakob Lindberg, lute professor at the Royal College of Music, brought all of his expertise to bear in preparing the scores and choosing among variant versions for his recordings, and also wrote the informative liner notes included in this edition.

I bought this SACD and listened to it in my car at night.
In spite of technique his tone sometimes sounds metallic for me but my friend said "No".
Tension of his lute is stronger ??

There are various reasons why the sound is not satisfying. First, Mr Lindberg, good continuo player, as a soloist is simply second-rate, as his extensive recording career shows to the true conoisseur. Second, he uses nylon and not gut in his performances and recordings, which added to a not truly limpid technique, makes for many noises and metallic sound. Last, but not least, the original miking in this case was as second rate as Mr Lindberg himself playing. In sum, not a truly exciting Dowland collection, just nice. And there is no doubt that listening to this in SACD or Hi Res is quite useless because id adds nothing to the listening experience, given that the original sound is not much more than only decent.

In fact, very few lute performers use gut instead of nylon. Only those more devoted to earlier music put gut as a general rule. An exception: Xavier Díaz-Latorre, whose repertoire comes from Renaissance to Early Romantics, ALWAYS puts pure gut in all his recordings. His recent vihuela recording for Passacaille is a true revelation, for instance (besides, he is the only one to use the real ornamentation coming from the treatises of the time). He is the ONLY big performer known to me that always uses gut. Many great performers use nylon or a combination of nylon and gut, or truly quality nylon strings, and their playing is very sensitive (from Juan Carlos Rivera to Monica Pustilnik or Evangelina Mascardi, to name but a few), but Lindberg's technique is far from these great performers. Lindberg has a name and a wide discography, but he cannot be included among the best (namely Hopkinson Smith, Paul O'Dette, Rolf Lislevand, Xavier Díaz-Latorre, Juan Carlos Rivera, and a few more like North, Mascardi, Pustilnik, Costoyas, Egüez... I am naming those who have a wider repertoire. I should include Lawon, Crawford and a few more whose core repertoire is 15th-16th century played with plectrum and gut strings). But this is just my humble opinion...

I listened to "Stolen Roses" and de Visée by Xavier Díaz-Latorre, so sensitive :))
I like Weiss and my favorite is José Miguel Moreno and Robert Barto but they seem to use nylon.
I have also Weiss & Bach by Evangelina Mascardi (recorded in 2001), combination ?
When lute, vihuela or baroque guitar is posted here, can you comment about it here ?
