Four years ago, in February 2015, Géraldine Laurent recorded with this quartet the At Work album, a true profession of faith in a rhythmic jazz, alive and without limits. Since then, many concerts, travels, bubbling and surprises, matter to everything that permeates the music and makes the life of a group.
And what a group! They have found themselves ... On the double bass, Yoni Zelnik, faithful to Geraldine since its beginnings and whose roundness of sound and impeccable precision make it irreplaceable; on the drums, Donald Kontomanou, perfectly at ease in the rhythmic mazes traced by the saxophonist and always surprising musicality; at the piano Paul Lay, who is now enjoying a brilliant career as a soloist, illuminating the quartet with his colorful flashes ...
And of course Géraldine. More free and inflamed than ever. His music can be built around a sentence, or develop at length on contemplative forms, but we always find an urgency, a presence that illuminates every second of his game. In his incessant quest for the real emotions of jazz, we is heard by the souls of Rollins, Dolphy, Coltrane, Hawkins or Parker, all resolutely striving towards the same goal ...
Geraldine wanted to call this record Cooking. Because in music as in cooking, it is a team affair to dose each ingredient for the ephemeral perfection of the final result. Because an album is conceived as a meal and it is possible to have taste buds in your ears. Because giving pleasure is organized, weighed, tastes. And because we always like to hear the passing musician feeling this pleasure when he pushes the door of the club and exclaims, amazed: wow ... cooking!
