George Kontrafouris Trio - The Passing (2020)

In this newly formed piano-trio, jazz pianist George Contrafouris is accompanied by two excellent young musicians: Kimon Karouzos on bass and Jason Wastor on drums who provide their youthful freshness and energy to Contra's compositions.
In addition to Contrafouri's five new compositions on the album, there are two covers. One is the composition "Aeoliana" by the pioneering jazz pianist, composer, and educator (and one of the first Contrafuri teachers) Mark Alexios (1939-2014) who played an important role in the development of the then young George as a pianist. The second is the rather unpredictable organic cover of Savvina Giannatos' song "Hammock". Yiannatos' youth work, "Hammock" first appeared in Corfu in 1982 at the Greek Song Contest established by Manos Hadjidakis. Giorgos Contrafouris with his trio transform it creatively and with respect into an atmospheric jazz composition.
With "The Passing", Contrafouris visits the classical piano-trio form and explores the piano as a means of revisiting the musical memories of his long and creative artistic career.
