A program of rare works, composed over a span of 10 years (1876-86) by the Belgian violinist and composer Henri Vieuxtemps and his two most brilliant students, Eugène Ysaÿe and Jenö Hubay. Three very distinct personalities are evident: the young Ysaÿe who makes us dance with his grand waltz and his exotic mazurka; Hubay who transports us to his native Hungary, with its flowers, its zephyrs and Czardas, and finally the old Master, Vieuxtemps seeking, in his most intimate thoughts of his final days, the journey to pure and sincere music.
A highlight of note is the first recording of the never recorded manuscript of Ysaÿe’s Great Concert Waltz, which was recently updated in Belgium. All the pieces on this album were recorded exclusively for ZEDClassics by the brother and sister duo Lawson & Lawson, Jill and Eliot.
