Tutu Puoane started playing music professionally in 1997 in downtown Johannesburg, South Africa. She studied jazz vocals and classical singing at the University of Cape Town, and at The Hague Royal Conservatory of Music and Dance. Whilst her first album mainly contained covers, her new album Quiet Now is much more personal and an original repertoire. Most of the songs were written by her partner and pianist Ewout Pierreux and bass player Nicolas Thys, with lyrics both in English and Sepedi (Tutu's mother tongue). Additionally the quartet recorded three covers by McCoy Tyner, Mark Fransman (great South African pianist and saxophone player) and Joni Mitchell. Quiet Now turned out to be a beautiful and very personal statement.
