Spanning three decades, this collection gathers material from his career with Motown, Elektra, and Columbia Records. It paints a broad yet clear picture of a gifted musician. His most successful recording of course was his collaboration with Bill Withers, "Just The Two Of Us" which is here in its long version. Other guest appearances include Grady Tate, Patti Labelle, Bill Cosby (no, he doesn't sing), Phyllis Hyman and Lalah Hathaway.
In addition to his own compositions, he does his own interpretation of "Mercy Mercy Me"(Marvin Gaye), "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life"(Stevie Wonder) and "Jamming"(Bob Marley). The last two tracks were released posthumously. The liner notes give a good backstory of his rise to stardom.
Grover Washington Jr. was one the greatest musicians to ever emerge in the 20th century, one whose legend will grow with the passage of time. Sadly, he passed away on Dec. 17, 1999 at age fifty-six but he left behind a legacy that future generations will appreciate.
