Luigi Piovano, Archi dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia - Schubert: Arpeggione & Der Tod und das Mädchen (2014)

Recently appointed chief conductor of the orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Luigi Piovano has assembled a strong program for their first album together. The recording features two fascinating transcriptions of chamber music favorites by Franz Schubert. The Arpeggione Sonata is heard in a version for cello and strings by Piovano (who also plays the solo part on a 5-string piccolo cello), and Gustav Mahler's string orchestra transcription of the poignant Death and the Maiden string quartet.
