The group was formed in 1969 by the Tieken brothers from Quincy, Illinois. Initially, they were called “Freddy Tieken And The Rockers” and began playing from the late fifties. From the group “Gonn” Gerry Gabel and Craig Moore joined. Then they changed the name to “American Music Band”. Then they finally became “Ilmo Smokehouse”. Thanks to their aggressive and interesting mix of hard rock with blues and prog elements, they were always well received. They made a name for themselves by continuously touring and sharing the stage with such giants as “MC5”, “Big Brother & The Holding Company”, “The Amboy Dukes”, “Brownsville Station”, “James Gang”, “Sugarloaf”, “Crow” , “The Flock” and BB King! Their only album was recorded in Memphis on “Beautiful Sound Studio”, owned by Dan Penn of “Box Tops” along with his partner Jim Johnson. Steve Gaines did not play with them for long before joining Lynyrd Skynyrd. After Gabel left the band, they turned into a “Smokehouse” and started playing prog with glitter rock elements.
