Although a) this was released on Concord's commercial subsidiary Vista, b) there are a couple of unnecessary vocal duets (one apiece with Vanessa Rubin and Brenda Lee Eager), and c) electric keyboards are sometimes utilized, this is a much stronger release from Dennis Rowland than his previous Rhyme, Rhythm & Reason. The singer sounds much more original this time around; there is a good mixture of "contemporary" and straight-ahead selections, and the musicians sound much more inspired. Highlights include "Detour Ahead," "The Comeback," "Autumn In New York," "Don't You Know I Care" and a touching rendition of "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." Keyboardist Michael Lang consistently takes honors among the sidemen, although tenor saxophonist Bob Sheppard has three strong appearances; Gerald Albright's two cameos fail to add much. Recommended.
