This two-CD (or three-cassette), 44-track compilation surveys the biggest hits by the most popular big bands of the swing era. Drawing primarily on the catalog of RCA Victor Records (which accounts -- along with their popularity -- for the multiple selections from such label signees as Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, and Benny Goodman), the set also licenses material from Columbia (notably Harry James) and Decca (notably Jimmy Dorsey) for a thorough collection that includes the biggest hits of the era, such as "Frenesi," "I've Heard That Song Before," "Heartaches," "In the Mood," and "I'll Never Smile Again," among many others. There are no annotations, but when the selection is foolproof, it's hard to complain. As of the spring of 1998, the set was available for about $20 for the cassettes and about $25 for the CDs, plus shipping and handling, from the Good Music Co. at 1-800-538-4200.
