In the fall of 2024, the older son of a Brooklyn-based American musician left home for college. When friends asked whether he was feeling “empty nest syndrome” (or, more precisely, half-empty nest syndrome), the musician always answered that everything was fine, and it was true. He, his wife, and their two sons had come through long and often harrowing years of helping their firstborn through deep and dangerous mental health struggles, so severe that the family had had to endure his being away for prolonged periods. His departure for college felt like a triumph, yet beneath that calm ran a more complex emotional reality.

One morning, sitting in his small backyard among birds, squirrels, and the wildflowers he and his wife grow for pollinators, the musician began to think of his home as an emptying nest. He borrowed books on birds and their nest-building methods from the library. Some nests are subtractive, like the simple scrape a killdeer makes on a pebbly beach, while others are additive, from the heaped branches of an eagle’s aerie to the delicate pendulous nests woven from grasses by weaverbirds. He had usually written songs starting from an emotion. This time he decided to let what he learned from this research guide the concept, the details, the instrumentation, and the way he composed for and directed his band. The experience of his earlier project, Slow Water, had convinced him that such an approach could lead to growth, both personal and musical, and he trusted that the emotion would find its own way through the process.

The result is the project Passerine. It brings together a fascination with the architecture of bird nests, a sense of unity with the whole planet, the bond with his wife and sons (also reflected in a song written ahead of their twenty-fifth anniversary), and the “family” that formed within the band during the work. It also includes a kinship with listeners: creative people of good intent willing to open themselves to one another through music. The work is dedicated above all to his older son, Maceo, with the farewell “Fly.”
