Both these atmospheric works are by Jewish composers who left Europe in the 1930s: Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, an Italian in the USA who wrote this Biblically-inspired concerto for Jascha Heifetz, and Munich-born Paul Ben-Haim, who, like Itzhak Perlman’s Polish parents, emigrated to Israel.
