In the late 1990s surf rock was making waves in the Israeli underground, and at the forefront of the new cultural obsession was Charlie Megira. 2003’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Fragments, the second of his six total releases—and first with The Hefker Girl—is a 25-track exploration of the surf noir and lo-fi garage he would trade on over the next decade and a half. Recorded on a 4-track tape cassette in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and his home in the Biet-She’an Valley, the album contrasts nods to ‘50s rockabilly icons like Link Wray, with dark, brooding instrumental vignettes. Going back and forth, up and down in a chaotic haze.
