Johannes Brahms' music requires from its performers a mixture of ardor and intimacy, which is achieved in this recording of the two Piano Concertos by French pianist Philippe Bianconi and Polish conductor Michal Nesterowicz, at the head of the 'Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. Brahms composed these two concertos a quarter of a century apart: the Premier in D minor is disheveled, at times violent and almost angry, that of the impetuous young man in his twenties whose career as a solo pianist is not yet completely excluded from his ambitions; the Second in B flat major exudes the serenity of a mature man in his forties. And Philippe Bianconi perfectly masters all the expressive registers of these two works, from that of the tragedy that carries opus 15 to that of the lyricism and poetry that emanates from opus 83.
