Grammy Nominated Album! The Boston Symphony Chamber Players' album, Profanes et Sacrées: 20th-Century French Chamber Music, features recordings of Ravel's Introduction and Allegro for harp, accompanied by string quartet, flute, and clarinet; Henri Tomasi's Cinq Danses profanes et sacrées; Henri Dutilleux's Les Citations, for oboe, percussion, harpsichord, and double bass; Debussy's Sonata for flute, viola, and harp; and Jean Françaix's Dixtuor, for wind quintet and string quintet.
The impetus was a longstanding desire to record Henri Dutilleux's Citations, Dutilleux being a composer whose works the BSO has championed for many years. To complement the Dutilleux, the goal was to bring together pieces employing many different ensemble configurations. The repertoire staples by Ravel and Debussy are in balance with the lesser-known works by Henri Tomasi and Jean Françaix. The result: a trio, a quartet, a quintet, a septet, and a dectet, comprising a satisfying and wide-ranging-though of course by no means comprehensive-sampling of distinctive, but all distinctly French, compositional voices from the last century.
