This CD contains two of the most well-known works by Cesar Franck, the Belgian/French composer (1822-1890). Franck was a great admirer of the music of Liszt and Wagner, appreciating the dramatic content of their compositions. Here, both the Symphony in D minor and the symphonic poem "Le Chasseur Maudit" (The Accursed/Damned Hunter), are among Franck's most dramatic works. In, particular, the "Chasseur" is based on a story about a hunter who neglects his religious duties to go hunting and is therefore condemned by God.
The performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra is very good, and so is the recording on Seraphim records.
