On Thursday and Friday, February 27 and 28, 1969, a remote unit from Columbia Records was seen parked outside the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. A dozen or so black cables ran rather unceremoniously along the ground and through a door into the piush Hong Kong Bar.
The beginning. On the center room stage everything is quiet. The bassman is staring into the audience; the flutist and the drummer are quietly waiting while Charlie adjusts his microphone. Suddenly a busy-look-ing Italian fellow scurries into the room and up to the stage. He announces that everything is in readiness.
The Charlie Byrd Quartet begins to play. The silence of the room seems to welcome the ‘stroke of genius." Charlie, always intense, seems tonight to be inspired. Satin Doll, then a bossa nova, an electric new composition - Bird of Paradise—written for Charlie by Don Ellis. ..the tape machines are still running... Teo Macero (the album's producer), the busy-looking Italian fellow is smiling now; all is going well. Charlie and the group are brilliant. The night ends, the audience goes home...everyone a little richer for the ex- perience. Their emotion has been captured by the “stroke of genius.” And, as Teo added, “There goes the tired, smiling, happy Italian—hey, that's me!" ~Bil Keane
