Last fall, when the Matinée released the song “Dancing on Your Grave” as a preview track from its new album of the same name, one got the sense that the band had upped its game. In fact, the Vancouver-based roots-rockers sounded like a band that had fully realized its sound.

According to singer Matt Layzell, this creative leap forward was born out of a time of personal upheaval for all members of the band. “We were all going through big life changes,” said Layzell via press release. “After a difficult split, I found myself disappearing on solo road trips into the wild with my dog, trying to clear my head.”

Eventually, the bandmates got back together and were surprised by the burst of creativity they felt when they returned to the studio. They were inspired to write more than 40 songs before whittling it down to 11 for the final cut. “Of the 11 that are on the record, more than half of them were written in the studio while we were doing the session,” said Layzell. “The songs were so fresh. We were learning them as we were playing them.”
