Sol Negro, Virginia Rodrigues’ first album, was produced by Celso Fonseca and featured Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento and Djavan. The album was well received in the United States and Europe, and the singer rarely received criticism. The Times in London wrote: “The new Diva of Brazilian music, the 33-year-old singer from Bahia, has moved Brazil with her debut album Sol Negro, which has a rich mix of African, Portuguese and traditional samba influences.”
