Bassist John Goldsby is one of many jazz artists who have departed from their native America to seek greater opportunities to perform and record in Europe. With fellow American John Marshall on trumpet and flügelhorn, along with Europeans Olivier Peters (tenor and soprano saxes), alto saxophonist Hayden Chisholm, pianist Frank Chastenier, and drummer Hans Dekker, Goldsby's session mixes standards, classic jazz works, and half a dozen originals. His fresh arrangement of the popular "Get Out of Town" kicks off with an unaccompanied arco solo, before switching gears to a breezy setting featuring Marshall's muted trumpet. The leader's energized hard bop scoring of Tom McIntosh's "Cupbearers," the funky and strutting trio performance of "Bohemia After Dark," and the snappy midtempo reworking of Duke Ellington's normally low-key ballad "Warm Valley" give an indication of Goldsby's imagination. Among his originals, the challenging rhythm of "Seven for Twelve" and the upbeat bossa nova "Brazilian Hat Trick," both featuring Chisholm's superb soprano sax, especially stand out. Don't be surprised to discover John Goldsby turning up more frequently on European labels like Nagel-Heyer.~Ken Dryden
