One of the last major representatives of the Kapellmeister tradition, Wolfgang Sawallisch remains closely associated to German romanticism, having left us a legacy of unmissable recordings (Schumann’s symphonies, operas of Wagner and Strauss…) both as conductor and accompanying pianist. Here is a collection of the best overtures by Carl Maria von Weber, notable from Oberon, Der Freischütz and Euryanthe, but also the Jubel-Ouvertüre for Friedrich August I of Saxony, famous for its majestic ending quote of God Save the Queen!
