Biel Blancafort - Kenoma (2021)

Biel Blancafort is a musician based in a little village in the heart Catalonia. Biel was born in Vic in 1994, he works as a composer and sound designer. Biel’s first appearance on Modern Obscure Music was back in 2016 supplying the opening track to the Ritual Rhythms compilation. Kenoma is Biel’s debut mini-album on the label, with the focus on piano and electronics. There is a calming quality to much of the music on this release. Each note is played with conviction and the space between the sounds is also important. In the author’s words: “The album, made in late 2019, is the musical representation of a dream I often have. A kind of soundtrack for this one. In this dream I arrive at a completely uninhabited remote island, called Kenoma. After touring the whole island and discovering its magical places invaded by fantasy spirits, I end up becoming an inhabitant.”

The title track features a hypnotic piano refrain and billowing yet hushed synths. Keys provide cover on Veiled Land and Horizons features a pointed melody. Abyss has levitating instruments, whilst Hidden Lair provides encircling keys. Llar finishes the journey at home, courtesy of beautiful pianos. Kenoma is an enchanting debut from Biel Blancafort.
