Charles Overton - Reflections (2026) [Hi-Res]

Boston-based harpist and composer Charles Overton has long been a distinctive presence on other people’s musical turf. He has performed and studied alongside saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, pianist Danilo Pérez and vocalist ganavya, played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and appeared on stages such as Newport Jazz, North Sea Jazz and Montreux. Now he steps forward as a leader for the first time with ‘Reflections’, a five-track EP.

On this record Overton expands the harp’s sonic boundaries: at times it recalls the crisp attack of a piano, at others the elastic flexibility of a guitar. However far he stretches the instrument, he stays true to its nature. The EP comes across as a portrait of a musician learning to trust his own voice, and offers something increasingly rare: music that helps listeners encounter themselves more fully. Attentive listening lies at the heart of the recording, a quality all the more valuable in a world that seldom slows down enough to hear what lies beneath the surface.
