Martha Argerich, Mikhail Pletnev - Prokofiev: Cinderella / Ravel: Ma Mere l’Oye (2004) [SACD]

This must be the best recorded piano sound ever. The chemistry between Argerich and Pletnev is teeming from every bar full of passion and commitment. Transcriptions itself are equally showpieces of virtuosity and musicality. Two master pianists are fuelling each other’s performance to a level beyond any criticism. Variety of piano tone and colour is incredible, like they are using different instruments for each number. The recording has natural dynamic range and the mighty instruments are placed naturally left and right with just enough surround to keep them focused and put the listener in a room with them. Sound image is transparent and sparkly with plenty of weight at the middle and low register. Four hands on 2 pianos can produce quite a noise and the dynamic outbursts are impressive.

Prokofiev is the main attraction here and both Argerich and Pletnev being specialists for his music, no surprises there. More intimate Ravel (4 hands on a single piano this time) gets equally appropriate treatment, with some beautiful legato playing and vivid descriptions of each and every image. Even if one prefers the full orchestral version, nothing is missing here in terms of expression and colouring.
