Arthur H - Mystic Rumba (2010)

Celebrating 20 years of recording, Arthur H wished to put out something different than just a compilation of his finest tracks. The choice to release a piano and voice double album of new versions of his favorite tunes might have seemed strange to those used to the lush instrumentations usually featured on his albums but, considering this 100 minute long oeuvre, you have to note how strong the songs still are in a stripped down form. Actually, this album reaffirms how great a songwriter Arthur H is.
The very strength of "Mystic Rumba" lies in the intimate feel it displays giving Arthur's fans something different to chew on while waiting for his returning adventures and, truth be told, the son of Jacques Higelin does a great job throughout these 24 tracks using perfectly his Tom-Waits-like voice and allowing us to journey in his peculiar and endearing universe.
"Mystic Rumba" is a must hear for whoever's interested in French chanson and even if understanding French makes for an more agreeable listening, those who doesn't will not be disappointed.
