Eventually, everyone would know Jimmy Dean as a maker of sausages, but once upon a time this journeyman country singer had his own television show and a string of chart hits. Although competent to a fault, his efforts in the country genre probably rank about as high in the overall scheme of things as his sausages. Nobody will get seriously poisoned through exposure to Dean's products, but one could no doubt do a whole lot better in terms of something to listen to or eat for breakfast. His voice is good, but he puts it to use presenting cornball, or over-exposed material. Here we have "Rocky Top," for example. It isn't totally tasteless, though, as he has the good sense to do songs by Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, Charlie Rich, and Buddy Mize, and the backing from a typical Chet Atkins-produced session band is professional but not memorable. ~ Eugene ChadbourneTitle: Everybody Knows
