The first of four volumes of live performances from the historic Town Hall concert in New York City that signaled the rebirth of Blue Note as a jazz label, One Night with Blue Note Preserved, Vol. 1 is easily one of the best of the lot, showcasing a number of musicians who had contributed as leaders and/or sidemen during its heyday in the 1960s, along with some more recent players. Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island" has more of an edge to it than earlier recordings, with the pianist/composer's inventive chops inspiring Freddie Hubbard's blazing trumpet. Likewise, Joe Henderson's "Recorda Me" finds new ground, opening with Tony Williams' intense drum solo, followed by the exciting blend of Henderson's tenor with vibist Bobby Hutcherson, Hancock, and Hubbard. Hutcherson and flautist James Newton take center stage for the playful jazz waltz "Little B's Poem," while another Hutcherson composition, "Bouquet," is an understated object of beauty, accompanied solely by Hancock and the extraordinary bassist Ron Carter. The disc wraps with James Newton's effective rendition of Eric Dolphy's edgy avant-garde piece "Hat and Beard" (an unusual tribute to Thelonious Monk), with Hutcherson, Carter, and Williams providing capable support. Briefly reissued without the other three volumes as Town Hall Concert a few years later, this out of print CD is well worth acquiring ~Ken Dryden
