Spyder Turner - Music Web (1978)

Spyder Turner had a 1967 hit with a cover of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" from 1961. The singer/songwriter wrote "Do the Dance," pop smash for Rose Royce on former Motown producer Norman Whitfield's Warner Bros. Records-distributed label, Whitfield Records. Because of that success, Turner got an artist deal with the label and his Music Web was released in summer 1978. Produced by former Motown producer Norman Whitfield, who also had a hand in The Temptations' 70s era hits, this album has stellar orchestral arrangements by Dave Blumberg and Gene Page, as well as some of the top talent of the day: bassist Keni Burke, guitarist Wah Wah Watson, drummer James Gadson, keyboardist Mark Davis, and background vocals by Turner's labelmates Stargard on "Which Way Is Up." Turner's wide, engaging vocal range recalls a gruff Edwin Starr and a soft Eddie Kendricks. The somewhat cramped mix contributes to the "live show" sound of the LP. Standouts are the first single, the thumpin' bass-laced "Get Down," the mid-tempo jazz sprinkled cut "Is It Love You're After," the gritty "I've Changed," the dynamic "I've Been Waitin'," the dramatic ballad "Tomorrow's Only Yesterday," and the sly, solid groover "You Never Had This Before." Three singles were issued from Music Web: "Is It Love You're After," "I've Been Waitin'," and "Tomorrow's Only Yesterday."
