Nate Brooks is from Stanton, KY, a small town at the western foothills of the Appalachians, just outside the Red River Gorge. He grew up playing the piano and learned to play along with The Beatles by ear. In college at Western Kentucky University, he learned to play guitar and write songs. Cited influences include indie rock acts Dr. Dog, Big Theif, and Shakey Graves, as well as the classics: Bruce Springteen, Lyle Lovett and John Prine.
Nate's sound uses folk instruments to make indie rock melodies and progressions. This sound, mixed with low, introspective vocals, has led some people to call him an "indie-rock Johnny Cash." Other people simply say he has good songs.
