Jo Mama was founded in 1970 in Los Angeles by guitarist and vocalist Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar, who three years earlier started playing psychedelic pop with the New York band James Taylor & The Original Flying Machine. By the time their self-titled debut album was released that same year, it was not only Danny Kootch who had established himself on the local music scene. So, drummer Joel O'Brien (here he is listed as Joel Bishop O'Brian), together with Danny, was in the ranks of the same James Taylor & The Original Flying Machine and The King Bees, also from New York; keyboardist Ralph Schuckett played in acid-psycho bands Clear Light (where the ubiquitous Kootch also appeared) and The Peanut Butter Conspiracy; bassist Charles Larkey was on The City with his then-wife Carol King, where he played guitar and sang none other than, of course, Danny Kortchmar. By the way, when the band “Jo Mama” started working on their debut album, the bassist was met by singer Abigale Haness (aka Gayle Haness), who became a member of the group, and her husband, of course, Charles Larkey. The band's debut album was released on Atlantic Records, produced by Peter Asher, known as half of the British pop duo Peter & Gordon and the older brother of model Jane Asher, longtime girlfriend of Paul McCartney.
